Jean-Jacques de Mesmes
Jean-Jacques de Mesmes, comte d'Avaux (1640, Paris – 9 January 1688, Paris) was a French magistrate, intendant of Soissons, and Président à mortier of the Parliament of Paris. The descendant of a family from Béarn, Mesmes was count of Avaux, viscount of Neufchâtel-sur-Aisne, Lord of Moissy-Cramayel, provost and master of ceremonies of the Ordre des Chevaliers du Saint-Esprit from 1671 to 1684. He participated in the signing of the Treaty of Nijmegen. He was a learned man, who possessed a large library, he traveled to Italy and was the second member elected to occupy seat 4 of the Académie française in 1676.
In 1683, he built to Asfeld a remarkable Baroque church, shaped like a viola da gamba.
His son Jean-Antoine de Mesmes was elected to the Académie française in 1710.
